Joint Admission Test for Masters

The Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM), commonly called IIT JAM, is a national computer-based examination for postgraduate science and related programmes. It provides a central route to programmes such as M.Sc., M.Sc. (Tech.), MS (Research), joint or dual M.Sc.–PhD degrees, M.Sc.–M.Tech. dual degrees and integrated PhD programmes at participating Indian Institutes of Technology.

JAM is organised rotationally by an IIT or IISc with the participating institutes. A JAM score may also be used by result-sharing institutions, but those institutes can require a separate application or counselling system. Qualifying the test is not an admission guarantee: the candidate must satisfy the Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) for each selected programme and complete the correct admission process.

Exam dates, fees, seats and programme eligibility change annually. Use this page to understand the stable system, then verify the applicable https://jam2026.iitb.ac.in/" class="inlink">official JAM website and brochures.

What programmes are available through JAM?

JAM is designed primarily for postgraduate study after a bachelor's degree. Available degree structures can include:

  • two-year M.Sc. programmes;
  • M.Sc. (Tech.) and other specialised science/technology master's programmes;
  • MS (Research);
  • M.Sc.–M.Tech. dual degree;
  • joint M.Sc.–PhD or M.Sc.–PhD dual degree; and
  • integrated PhD programmes.

The exact programme list changes. A test paper does not correspond to one degree: for example, a Mathematics rank may make a candidate eligible for several programmes, but only if the candidate also meets each programme's MEQ.

JAM test papers

JAM has seven subject papers:

CodeTest paper
BTBiotechnology
CYChemistry
ENEconomics
GGGeology
MAMathematics
MSMathematical Statistics
PHPhysics

A candidate may apply for one or, where the schedule permits, two papers. Two-paper applicants must ensure the papers are in different sessions. Taking a paper does not by itself make the candidate academically eligible for every programme linked to that paper.

Who can appear?

JAM is open to candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree or are appearing in the final examination of the qualifying degree by the admission cycle's prescribed conditions. The examination has ordinarily been open to all nationalities without an age restriction.

However, exam eligibility and programme eligibility are different. The broad rule may allow a candidate to sit a JAM paper, while an admitting IIT can require particular subjects for a stated number of semesters, a specific degree, or another academic background for admission. Candidates must complete the undergraduate programme before the admitting institute's deadline and submit proof of satisfying its MEQ.

Before registering, create a table containing each desired programme, linked JAM paper, required bachelor's subjects/semesters and any special conditions. The https://jam2026.iitb.ac.in/files/JAM2026_Admission_Brochure.pdf" class="inlink">official admission brochure is the authoritative programme-to-MEQ and seat reference.

Exam pattern

Every JAM paper is a three-hour, English-medium computer-based test with 60 questions for 100 marks. All three sections are compulsory:

SectionTypeQuestionsMarks
ASingle-correct MCQ30: ten 1-mark and twenty 2-mark50
BMultiple-select MSQ10 questions of 2 marks20
CNumerical Answer Type20: ten 1-mark and ten 2-mark30
**Total****60****100**

Negative marking

Negative marking applies only to Section A MCQs. A wrong answer to a 1-mark MCQ loses 1/3 mark; a wrong answer to a 2-mark MCQ loses 2/3 mark. There is no negative marking for MSQ or NAT questions, but MSQs receive credit only when all correct choices and no incorrect choice are selected. No partial credit is awarded under the established pattern.

NAT answers are entered using the on-screen numerical keypad. Candidates should practise signed values, decimals and rounding exactly as directed by the interface. The https://jam2026.iitb.ac.in/Syllabus.html" class="inlink">official syllabus and pattern page provides paper syllabi and mock links.

Syllabus and paper selection

Each test paper has its own official syllabus. Selection should begin with target programmes, not merely the subject that feels easiest. Work backwards:

1. identify the degrees and institutes you genuinely want;

2. check their MEQs in the admission brochure;

3. identify the accepted JAM paper or papers; and

4. compare the official syllabus with your undergraduate preparation.

This prevents a serious mistake: earning a good rank in a paper that does not make the candidate eligible for the intended programme.

The papers broadly cover undergraduate concepts in their named disciplines. Biotechnology is interdisciplinary and can draw on biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics; Mathematical Statistics combines mathematics and statistics; Economics includes microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics/mathematics and Indian economy topics as specified in the syllabus. Use only the applicable official syllabus as the final checklist.

Preparation strategy

Start by solving a recent official paper under full three-hour conditions. Record marks separately for MCQ, MSQ and NAT; the formats require different decision-making.

1. Map the syllabus. Tag every unit as secure, repairable or new, and connect it to undergraduate notes and standard texts.

2. Rebuild concepts and derivations. JAM frequently tests whether a concept can be applied in an unfamiliar form, not only recalled.

3. Practise numerical accuracy. Maintain units, signs, domain restrictions and intermediate precision. NAT questions punish careless entry even without negative marking.

4. Train MSQ completeness. Evaluate every option independently. Selecting one correct option is insufficient if another correct option is omitted.

5. Use MCQ risk control. Separate certain answers, questions reducible to two choices and unsupported guesses; negative marks can erase several correct responses.

6. Take full mocks. Develop a pass order such as direct questions first, longer calculations second and doubtful MCQs last.

7. Analyse errors. Classify each loss as a concept gap, algebra/calculation error, misread condition, option-selection error or time problem.

Score, AIR and cutoff

JAM assigns an All India Rank separately for each test paper. The merit list includes candidates according to the paper's qualifying criteria and category-wise seat context. A scorecard can report marks and AIR, but merit-list inclusion still creates no automatic seat entitlement.

“JAM cutoff” can mean three different things:

  • qualifying marks: the minimum score for inclusion in the relevant merit list;
  • opening/closing rank: the first and last rank receiving a programme offer in a particular category and round; and
  • programme MEQ: the academic eligibility condition, which is not a test-score cutoff.

Closing ranks change by paper, institute, programme, category, round, seats and candidate preferences. Previous-year ranks are useful planning evidence, not promises. The official admission portal publishes opening and closing ranks with the corresponding programme choices.

IIT admitting institutes

The centrally coordinated JAM admission system has included the following 22 IITs. Programme participation varies, so use the admission brochure rather than assuming every IIT offers every subject.

The official JAM system has recently covered roughly 3,000 IIT seats, but the live seat matrix must be checked for the applicable cycle.

Result-sharing institutes and CCMN

JAM scores are also used by IISc and various Centrally Funded Technical Institutes, including NITs and other notified organisations. These are result-sharing institutes, not necessarily part of the IIT JAM allocation portal.

Many NIT/CFTI MSc admissions using JAM are coordinated through https://ccmn.admissions.nic.in/" class="inlink">CCMN. Candidates must register separately, fill CCMN choices and follow its eligibility, fee and allotment rules. Other result-sharing institutes can require direct applications. Passing JAM alone does not register a candidate for either route.

Always separate:

  • JAM examination registration;
  • JAM IIT admission application through the official portal;
  • CCMN registration for participating NITs/CFTIs; and
  • direct applications to any other score-sharing institution.

Application process

JAM examination registration is completed through the official online application system. Candidates provide personal, academic and paper details, choose test cities, upload the required photograph/signature/category or disability documents and pay the applicable fee. Save the enrolment details, confirmation and payment proof.

If applying for two papers, verify that their official sessions do not clash. Check every category and paper selection before final submission; later corrections are limited to the announced process.

Test day

Download and read the admit card. Carry the permitted original identity document and report before gate closure. Phones, personal calculators and unauthorised materials are prohibited. JAM supplies an on-screen virtual calculator where specified and a scribble pad under test-centre rules.

At the workstation, verify the paper code. Learn the official mock interface beforehand, particularly marking for review, MSQ selection and NAT entry.

What to do after the JAM result

Qualified candidates seeking IIT admission must submit a separate admission form through the official JAM portal. The typical workflow is:

1. verify AIR and merit-list status;

2. recheck every programme's MEQ;

3. submit the admission application and fee within the separate window;

4. select all acceptable institute-programme combinations and place them in genuine preference order;

5. freeze choices by the notified deadline;

6. monitor every allocation round in the candidate portal; and

7. respond to an offer before its deadline.

An offer normally provides three choices:

  • Accept and Freeze: keep the offered programme and leave further upgrade consideration;
  • Accept with Upgrade: retain the offered seat while being considered automatically for higher preferences; or
  • Reject and Quit: decline the offer and leave subsequent rounds.

Accepting requires the notified Seat Booking Fee, later adjusted by the admitting institute. Failure to respond or pay on time cancels the offer. After allocation closes, the IIT verifies the degree, MEQ, category documents and other requirements before final admission.

For non-IIT choices, complete CCMN or the institute's direct process independently.

How to build a preference list

Rank programmes by what you would actually choose if all were available. Compare curriculum, research groups, dissertation structure, degree type, progression to PhD, location and total cost. Do not place an unwanted programme above a preferred one merely because its old closing rank looks safer; the algorithm already considers rank and availability.

Include only programmes whose MEQ you satisfy and would join. A long but careless list can produce an upgrade to a higher-listed option that the system treats as preferable and binding.

Essential official resources

The most important JAM habit is to check programme eligibility before paper selection and again before choice filling. A strong AIR cannot compensate for an unmet MEQ.
