CAT is the computer-based management aptitude test used as a prerequisite for postgraduate and fellow/doctoral programmes of the IIMs. Listed non-IIM institutions may also use CAT scores, but the IIMs have no role in their selection processes.
CAT is not a common counselling system. A percentile does not automatically produce an IIM seat. Each IIM independently sets programme eligibility, sectional and overall shortlist thresholds, composite-score weights, interview stages and final selection rules.
Eligibility
The verified IIM rule requires a recognised bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, reduced to 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Candidates in the final year of a bachelor’s degree, or awaiting results after completing degree requirements, may apply subject to the certification and completion deadlines prescribed by the relevant IIM.
Where a university awards CGPA, its certified conversion method applies. If it has no conversion scheme, CAT instructions specify the applicable equivalence method. Meeting minimum CAT eligibility does not guarantee that an IIM will shortlist the candidate.
Exam structure
CAT contains three separately timed sections:
| Section | What it tests |
|---|---|
| VARC | Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension |
| DILR | Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning |
| QA | Quantitative Ability |
The examination is computer-based and has been conducted in multiple sessions. Exact question count, MCQ/non-MCQ mix and section timing must be taken from the admission-year mock and test-day guide because the IIMs can change the structure.
Recent CAT papers have used a two-hour format with 40 minutes per section. Candidates cannot move freely between sections. MCQs generally apply negative marking for wrong answers, while non-MCQs must be handled according to the official test-year instructions.
Why scaled score and percentile differ from raw marks
Different forms are administered across test sessions. CAT normalises scores to adjust for location and scale differences across forms, then reports sectional and overall scaled scores and percentiles.
A percentile is a relative position among test takers, not percentage marks. A 95 percentile does not mean 95% of the paper was answered correctly. Institutes use both sectional and overall percentiles; a strong overall result may fail a shortlist if one section is below the institute’s threshold.
Application process
1. Register only at the official CAT website.
2. Enter identity, contact, academic and work-experience details exactly as supported by documents.
3. Select category carefully; the official notice may prohibit later category changes.
4. Choose IIM programmes and interview cities/options provided in the form.
5. Upload photograph, signature and valid category/PwD certificates.
6. Select test-city preferences and pay the applicable fee.
7. Save the submitted application and payment confirmation.
8. Use an announced edit window only for fields that the CAT authority permits.
9. Download the admit card and follow its reporting and identity instructions.
One CAT registration fee covers the IIM programme choices available in the CAT form, but many non-IIM schools require separate applications and fees.
How to prepare
VARC
Build reading stamina across economics, science, history, philosophy and social issues. For reading comprehension, distinguish the author’s claim from examples and background. For verbal ability, practise paragraph structure, summaries, sentence placement and logical flow.
DILR
DILR rewards set selection. Practise tables, arrangements, distribution, games, networks, scheduling and hybrid sets. During mocks, identify which sets were solvable but selected too late, and which consumed time without yielding answers.
QA
Build reliable foundations in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number systems and modern mathematics. Learn to recognise when substitution, options or estimation is faster than a full derivation. Accuracy under sectional time pressure matters more than collecting formulas.
Mock analysis
After each full mock, record section-wise attempts, accuracy, time on wrong answers, easy questions missed, DILR set-selection errors and percentile movement. Analyse before taking the next mock. Preparation should improve decision-making, not merely increase question volume.
Understanding cutoffs
There is no single CAT cutoff. Separate these concepts:
- minimum CAT eligibility for a programme;
- qualifying overall and sectional percentile thresholds published by an institute;
- effective percentile/profile needed to receive a shortlist in a particular applicant pool;
- final composite-score cutoff after interview and other components.
Published minimum percentiles are not admission guarantees. A shortlist formula may use Class 10, Class 12, graduation marks, work experience, academic/gender diversity and CAT performance. Final selection may add Personal Interview, Written Ability Test or another institute-specific assessment.
What happens after the result
1. Download and preserve the CAT scorecard.
2. Check every selected IIM’s admission-policy and shortlist page.
3. Complete any required shortlist form or confirmation by its deadline.
4. Apply separately to desired non-IIM institutions.
5. Prepare documents supporting academics, category and work experience.
6. Attend WAT, GD or PI stages wherever prescribed.
7. Compare final offers by programme, total cost, curriculum, location and verified placement outcomes.
8. Pay the acceptance amount and follow withdrawal/refund rules.
Some institutes require applications before CAT results. Build a school deadline tracker during registration season rather than waiting for the scorecard.
Interview preparation
Be ready to explain academic choices, work responsibilities, career goals and why the programme fits them. Revise graduation fundamentals and major developments in your field. Candidates with work experience should quantify responsibilities and outcomes without exaggerating them. Prepare for current affairs through reasoned viewpoints rather than memorised slogans.
IIM and non-IIM distinction
The CAT website publishes the participating IIMs and registered non-IIM member institutions for that test year. Registration as a CAT score user is not a ranking or quality endorsement. Verify each non-IIM institution’s programme approval, degree-awarding authority, fees, placement report and refund policy independently.
